Ajay Devgn Sets Action Comeback With ‘Chauhaan’

Top Bollywood star Ajay Devgn is set to headline “Chauhaan,” an action entertainer presented by Jio Studios and produced in association with Colour Yellow Productions, marking his debut collaboration with filmmaker Aanand L. Rai.

The title was unveiled Thursday on what would have been the birth anniversary of Devgn’s late father, stunt choreographer and action director Veeru Devgan.

The announcement video features the classic song Amitabh Bachchan song “Jumma Chumma De De” from “Hum” (1991) in the backdrop. The preview opens with a tense dialogue tracking a costly military encounter. The sequence outlines the failure of conventional tactical measures, including tear gas, pellet guns, and water cannons, to handle localized resistance. The narrative shifts to a public address in Kashmir before building to the introduction of Devgn’s character, the titular Chauhaan.

The film is directed by Neeraj Yadav and produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Rai and Himanshu Sharma under Jio Studios and Colour Yellow Productions, with a theatrical release date set for Oct. 1, 2027.

Devgn, who has appeared in over 100 films across a career stretching more than three decades, first established himself as a leading action star with his 1991 debut “Phool Aur Kaante,” in which he was introduced standing astride two moving motorcycles. That picture was directed by his father, Veeru Devgan, who had built a reputation as one of Bollywood’s most sought-after stunt choreographers before moving into direction.

Over the following decades, Ajay Devgn went on to headline action franchise “Singham” and comedy franchise “Golmaal,” as well as thrillers such as “Drishyam” and its sequel, and won his third Indian National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the period epic “Tanhaji” (2020). Recent releases including the supernatural thriller “Shaitaan” (2024) and action outing “Raid 2” (2025) were both box office successes, while his most recent releases – “Son of Sardaar 2” and “De De Pyaar De 2,” both 2025 – saw him return to comedy.

Jio Studios, the content arm of Reliance Industries, has emerged as one of Indian cinema’s most active financiers and is coming off the back of “Dhurandhar,” Aditya Dhar’s spy action thriller starring Ranveer Singh, both instalments of which are amongst the highest grossing films of Indian cinema.

Colour Yellow Productions, founded by Rai, has produced a range of critically and commercially successful titles including the “Tanu Weds Manu” franchise and “Raanjhanaa.” The screenplay for “Chauhaan” is by Himanshu Sharma, who has collaborated with Rai across much of his filmography.
